Experimentation across mediums and with everyday and industrial materials underlies Rana’s practice. For her outdoor works, she has often worked in metal for its durability. Rana has worked with anodized poured aluminum, sheet aluminum, gold-plated bronze, and bronze using a lost wax technique. She has also integrated materials including pre-used spray painted toys and fabric dipped in polyurethane into her core practice of abstract wood sculptures, fashioning mixed media works that bridge organic and inorganic forms. When working with metal or with newer technologies such as 3D printing, Rana has often collaborated with technicians and craftspeople in her Bay Area community who are not normally engaged by contemporary artists.
