Rana’s series Memories are the Antidotes reflect on her transnational upbringing across three continents. She created soft round “memory pods” from spare fabric including saris, dipping the round forms into polyurethane before installing them into in abstract wooden sculptures. In these works, as across her practice, Rana builds upon the natural form of the wood. The curve in Wave II, for instance, is naturally occurring due to an infection in the wood, which Rana excised before streamlining the form and embellishing it with pods. These works reflect the artist’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between organic and inorganic materials, and of using chemical processes, including charring, to transform elements of her work.
