Rana conceived of this sculpture as she and her husband were simultaneously recovering from surgery in 2022. The work intends to remind both the artist and audiences of the importance of healing, and incites memories of ritual and ceremony that Rana absorbed early in her life but has since left behind. With this work, Rana introduces the process of charring, or “painting with fire,” into her untreated wood sculptures. Charring makes the forms supple, as torching wood softens its edges and creates a residue that can be smudged and extended to stain the work further; it also shows how beauty can be created from a potentially destructive circumstance, a poignant reflection on healing itself.
