Invitation to Play
Trees are not still. They are in constant negotiation with gravity, light, and time — extending outward in fractal patterns, mapping the space they inhabit as they grow. Invitation to Play is an ongoing series of monumental redwood sculptures that begins with three months of looking up.
Each work is hand-carved using deep nodular relief, followed by controlled charring that burns away softer grain to raise the growth rings — each one a record of a year, a map of survival. Into the charred wood, multicolored threads are handwoven, echoing the Indian ritual of tying offerings around sacred trees — a gesture of devotion and reciprocity — and tracing the logic of mycelium networks through which trees sustain and care for one another underground.
These are not objects to observe from a distance. Move through the shifting silhouettes. Follow the instinct to run between trees, to climb, to play.
